All e-Commerce web design projects begin as a Management System because you must have a way to add products without programming. We begin with a CMS which allows our clients to add text, pages, product photos and then we add an online shopping system. As custom programmers we typically design the shopping cart ourselves as this allows us to build in whatever features the client would like to have. For example we can setup an inventory system that keeps track of the quantity of products on hand. We can set it to email the site administrator when inventory reaches a certain level such as 5 product remaining. What happens when a product is sold out also involves options. As an example we could set it to not display the item at all when it is sold out or maybe you’d rather have it display and not allow anyone to purchase and show “Out Of Stock” or maybe it should suggest other items they might like instead.
